Diwali 2021 was going to be a festive period. Lights, celebrations, revelry with family and friends, and the joy of sharing sweets and snacks—this was the essence of the festival. But for me, that Diwali was the beginning of a fight I had never seen coming.
A life-changing spine surgery that was supposed to repair left me with a disabling nerve rootlet injury, resulting in a Grade 0 foot drop in my right ankle. This condition turned even the most basic of tasks like walking into a chore, and even the slightest movement into a battle.
My life overnight was transformed. Mobility was a daily battle, and the rehabilitation process exhausted me physically, emotionally, and financially. No matter how many treatments I underwent, the condition did not change, and I had to live in a reality that I never envisioned.
Loss of More Than Physical Mobility
And if physical suffering was not enough, I also suffered an emotional and professional blow—I lost my job due to my illness. A job I fought for was lost, and I was defeated. The financial cost added another level of tension, as medical bills accumulated with no way to make a living.
I was trapped in a cycle of hopelessness for two years, questioning everything. The driven, high-energy woman I once was now felt trapped in a body that wouldn't comply. The future was uncertain, and the burden of my situation was too much to bear.
Finding Strength In Times of Despair
But deep inside, there was a spark of strength that would not die. Instead of letting my circumstances dictate my life, I decided—I was going to fight. Not just physically, but in my head and in my heart.
I put myself on a path of personal rebirth, focusing on my health and well-being. Through sheer determination, I lost over 30 kilograms, proving to myself that I still had control of my life. It was a symbolic victory, a reminder that in spite of the odds, I still had control of my destiny.
